Ernst Fall Fest! Exactly One month from Today!

“Where the Western Things Are”

The Event

Ernst Fall Festival is a radical community festival that incorporates multiple student organizations, musicians, artists, and non-profits into a fall celebration. It especially highlights Ohio musical talents and looks to serve a musically eclectic student taste.  This year’s festival is no different, with the signing of five bands ranging from alternative rock, blues to bluegrass. The festival also works to organically entertain attendees with an array of student org hosted activities.

The long standing goal of Ernst Fall Fest has been to promote fellowship and goodwill between the Western student community, and the greater Oxford student body with local non-profits. This is accomplished through a fun entertaining atmosphere where recreational leisure leads to interactivity and community bonding between organizations.

Activities

Activities at Ernst Fall Fest vary greatly depending upon what student organizations choose to host and provide for the event. However, the Western Program and its partners are sponsoring free live music, Inflatable bounce house, and a gaming station to provide a core foundation of entertainment. The rest is up to YOU and your organization! Be creative, host a relay race, a food item, costume contest, perform at our open mic station, corn hole, or talk to Gilman’s about renting a cotton candy machine! There are no limitations to what you can provide/vend!

Every year a key feature is the Pumpkin carving contest benefiting the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. For a minimum donation of three dollars you can purchase a pumpkin and carve it on site! Let’s be honest what is Halloween without carving a pumpkin! This year we are making it a goal to raise two thousand dollars for the fund! Can you help us?  Profits from shirt sales, and the proceeds from the pumpkin carving contest will go directly to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Location

Ernst Fall Festival is being held behind Peabody Hall(105) at the Ernst Nature Theater(45). The venue is located right off of Western Drive, and parking is free the day of the event(After 4 PM). See the attached map for the precise location of Peabody Hall and Ernst Nature Theater.

Review: Eastern College

Eastern College was publicly screened tonight at McGuffey Hall, It was well recieved by members of the Western Program, M.A.F.I.A. film club, and the Miami Student. The film provided many laughs throughout the evening and encouraged critical thought into admisitrative decisions made by University Presidents/boards.
It was scripted using a meanadering story telling tone that encapsulates ‘midwestern’ campfire stories. The stories really enwrapped and made the audience feel as if they were part of the scene. This at times increased the humour, and also the awkwardness of crude sex scenes and dirty joke humor. In all female-male interactions it is interesting to note that the females were generally the aggressor, doing the ‘picking’ up of seemingly passive aggressive males. All in all the scripting style made the film organic and really connected his story to the college students in all of us.
After the filming actors Jonathan Dicks, Christopher Clark Cowan, and director of photography Anthony Rickert-Epstein stuck around with James Flynn to answer audience questions and to discuss future projects. It was interesting seeing three Miami graduates collaborate on this film (Dicks, Epstein, and Flynn) and made it evident where a lot of the creative liberties and influences came from.
The originally scored music for the film featured jazz and percussion pieces performed by the Directors brother Matt Flynn. It made the film very unique and interesting, particularly in a cocktail party scene where the blues group performed live. Even the final scene of the film featured an improv percussion piece by the actors themselves! I am definitely excited to see Matt Flynn team up with John Hurd at Ernst Fest for an amazing Blues/jazz experience!

Western Cotillion!

Western Cotillion is upon us! Come decked out and ready to dance in your best and most outrageous attire on

September 17th on McKee Beach
     8:30-11:00pm
If you are like me and have never had the privilege of attending such a prestigious event read the following caption for an idea of what it is all about!

The group shot of us Western Cotillion goers. Western Cotillion is an awesome tradition at the beginning of the school year of the Western College Program at Miami University in which we have a ridiculous costume dance party in commemoration of some of the important ladies of the original Western Women’s College. “

This is a great event to meet new people and enjoy old friendships before the rigor of the school year sets in. This year the event will be hosted outside of McKee and a DJ will be provided by WMSR student radio. All Western Campus residents welcome! (party crashers encouraged!) Come enjoy the revelry and festivities, and break out of your comfort zone to discover the western thing that is in all of us!

Eastern College

Eastern College is a independent film written and directed by western graduate James Francis Flynn. The film has just completed a festival circuit where it has won audience choice awards, and actor performance awards. Here is a plot summary for the film written by James Francis Flynn:

Four recently graduated college roommates spend their last summer in a small town, experiencing their changing friendships, their relationships with the women in their lives, and the possibility that their alma mater might be shut down due to new administration. In this outrageous independent comedy, Nathan, Dom, Justin, and Bob move into their recently deceased Dean’s house and start partying. Their good times get a bit set back upon learning that the new President of their university, President Garlin, intends to shut down their art school and turn it into a business school. As Nathan does everything he can to keep their art school active and alive, his roommates continue to party and pick up girls, leading to a concluding confrontation between the students and President Garlin, and a subsequent final party at their house that ends with disastrous results.”
Come out on Sept. 15 for a free screening on Miami (Oh) campus. McGuffey Hall room 322 at 7:00 pm. Also after the filming there will be Q/A with James Flynn and actor Jonathan Dicks.

Look for free popcorn and other promo’s across campus leading up to the event.
